Fall into the Festival Season

Nearing the end of a very long Indian summer, a chill in the air is finally present in Provence and everyone is gearing up for an eventful fall and winter. Thanks to our agricultural roots, the time of year surrounding the harvest is always filled with joy, togetherness, and community. Some of the things I look forward to most in the fall are the Provençal markets, events, and festivals. No matter what your passion is, there is something for everyone. I am particularly excited about the art, music, and, of course, the food!

 

 

My first recommendation is the Route des Artistes in St. Remy. Beginning on the first Sunday of October, the event hosts dozens of local French artistes who are given the chance to exhibit their work. The path begins at the perimeter of the town and then weaves through St. Remy’s charming town center. The beautiful tree-lined stroll is only enhanced by the wonderful artists who graciously display their work. If you’re looking to buy some exciting new décor, support local artists, or even just spend a wonderful morning walking around, the Route des Artistes is perfect for you.

 

 

Next on my list is the Avignon Blues Festival which, as it happens, is celebrating its 20th year anniversary! The festival always blends traditional blues and gospel with fringe contemporary sets ranging from rock to funk. This outing is perfect for anyone who loves hearing eclectic music and seeing what new things are happening in the music world. Aside from full festival tickets, which can be a bit pricy, the event this year is offering two-night passes for 50€ which is a steal.

 

 

Finally, if food is more your vibe, my last event is the Chestnut Festival in Collobrières. If there’s anything that could better ring in the spice and flavor of the season, I have yet to find it. Considered the chestnut capital of the world, Collobrières goes all out at this time of year with chestnut paste, preserves, baked goods, and certainly, the classic roasted chestnuts. I personally love these single-food oriented festivals but if perhaps chestnuts aren’t your favorite, fret not, these events are always brimming with plenty of wine, fromage, and charcuterie to distract yourself with.
